Do you need to budget your trip to Mongolia ? Wanna know the cost of living in Mongolia ? Compare it to the French cost of living here !
I made a document that compares cost of living in Mongolian and French capitals, Paris and UlaanBaatar, based on product or service’s prices.
General cost of living is 24% cheaper in UlaanBaatar.
Let’s observe that fruits and vegetables are way more expensive than in France, except for potatoes. It can be explained by the fact that Mongolia haven’t got much arable lands. They have indeed to import most of their vegetable consumption. They don’t grow vine either, that’s why wine price is 4.70% higher.
Water may be scarce in some parts of Mongolia. Water bottle’s price makes cost of living rate jump to 18.90% more than Paris’, for running water is 1. rare, 2.
very extremely polluted. Clean, running water infrastructures are not settled everywhere in the capital yet, especially in the growing yurts’ quarters that surround the city center. About half of UB’s inhabitants are connected to the water grid.
Moreover, water derivated from a close river and pipes that drive water to equiped flats are contaminated with metal residues, like mercury, due to « Ninja Turtles ». It points out the illegal miners that search for gold remainings on the borders of the mines near UlaanBaatar.
If you want to know more about urban water’s issue, you’ll find here the official study (2011) designed by the Mongolian ministry of nature, environment and tourism, « Urban water vulnerability to climate change in Mongolia. » This subject may not be related to our cost of living article, but it’s worth reading.
Data is extracted from a bank-related app that displays worldwide cost of living for expats. If you come from abroad, you can compare your own with Mongolian cost of living. Note that the comparative app is written in French, but icons will be of very much use.
